1. Describe the characteristics of the typical polyphase circuits that are used in electric power systems.
What are the advantages of 3-phase AC power systems over single-phase AC systems? Explain them
briefly.
2. Derive the total instantaneous power p(t) absorbed by the loads in the following single and three-phase
circuits. Compute and draw the instantaneous voltages, currents and powers using a computer software
or program.
(a) An impedance load Z = 1 + j0.5
is connected across a 100V rms, 50Hz voltage source.
(b) A balanced Y-connected load of Z = 10+j8
per phase connected to a balanced 50 Hz three-phase
source with a line-to-line voltage of 200 V rms.
3. [textbook, Prob. 2.7 on page 44] Two impedances, Z1 = 0.8 + j5.6
and Z2 = 8 − j16
, and a
single-phase motor are connected in parallel across a 200 V rms, 60 Hz supply as shown in the figure.
The motor draws 5 kVA at 0.8 power factor lagging.
