Summary: a fairly advanced book on amplifiers
Rating: 5
John Linsley Hood was a famous British audio designer who published many designs for audio amplifiers and test equipment primarily in Wireless World magazine. His most famous design was a 10 watt class A transistor amplifier published in 1969. It's found in this book. An update to this circuit was published in 1996.
The first 2 chapters cover various circuit diagram symbols and the basics of passive circuit components - resistors, capacitors, inductors, switches. Very useful stuff.
Rest of book is on amplifiers, power supplies, filters and feedback.
This is not an intro book by any means. He does not provide detailed descriptions of how the circuits work nor does he derive the equations presented. It's basically a historical development of audio circuit design. You have to have a thorough understanding of amplifiers and electronics to appreciate it.
There's some mention of vacuum tubes but mostly the circuits are transistor-based.
This book would be most suited to advanced DIY'ers.
Second edition has been reprinted by Audio Amateur Press of Peterborough, New Hampshire.
