The vision for MPEG-21 is to define an open multimedia framework that will enable transparent and augmented use of multimedia resources across a wide range of networks and devices used by different communities. The intent is that the framework, once finished, will cover the entire multimedia content delivery chain encompassing content creation, production, delivery, trade and consumption. A novel paradigm is provided in which the user can create, modify, protect, adapt and consume digital items (DI). Such paradigm accepts all participants of the content value-chain as Users (operators, service providers, content creators, and end-users) while allowing each of them to have simultaneously different roles. This evolving framework addresses all possible actions on Digital Items among which Digital Rights Management (DRM), Digital Item Adaptation (DIA) and Digital Item Processing (DIP). The initial parts of the MPEG-21 framework have been finalised (e.g. Digital Item Declaration DID, Digital Item Identification DII) or are at draft standard status (e.g. Digital Item Adaptation DIA or the Rights Expression Language REL and the Rights Data Dictionary RDD). However, there are still several gaps to be filled both within the standards currently under development as well as between them to complete the MPEG-21 vision. In this context, the goal of DANAE is to exercise, develop and improve a flexible, dynamic and distributed MPEG-21 chain and to contribute these developments to the MPEG-21 standardization effort in the following innovative areas:

Digital Item Processing

One aspect related to the DI concept is that the so-called Digital Item Declaration is a static declaration of only the information (structure, resources and metadata) in the DI. In the declaration itself there is no implied processing of that information. While the separation of the information from the usage of the information in Digital Items has significant advantages - different users can receive very different presentations of information -, it also means that upon receipt of the static declaration, a user has nothing that indicates how the information should be processed. Digital Item Processing is the area of MPEG-21 that will encompass the aspects of processing a static DI from an MPEG-21 peer (including, e.g., end-users, agents acting on behalf of them, clients/terminals, servers, network nodes, etc.) perspective. It includes such processing as downloading the DI; requesting IPMP and DRM for this DI; downloading and presenting individual media resources; and performing tasks ("methods") that an author requires for a particular DI. While much of Digital Item Processing is still in the early stages of consideration, Digital Item Methods (DIM) and Digital Item Base Operations (DIBOs) have been identified of particular importance to Digital Item usage that needs to be defined in more detail. These methods and base operations provide an implementation-independent mechanism for an MPEG-21 peer to specify a preferred set of procedures by which the DI should be handled. Thus DIMs and DIBOs will provide the "glue" between the different pieces of MPEG-21. The DIP standardization effort in MPEG-21 has recently achieved Working Draft status.

Beyond today's basic understanding and concepts on DIP the project DANAE will therefore develop architectural concepts and tools supporting the application of DIP for DIA. Also, DANAE will contribute to further development of the basic DIP concepts by developing defining an API for calling DIBOs from DIMs. A proof of concept will be performed by a software implementation of the most relevant tools of DIP in the DIA context.

Digital Item Adaptation

The current state of technological advances in MPEG-21 DIA supports mainly static adaptation of Digital Items with respect to resource constraints and user profiles. Moreover, DIA is not yet not fully related to all other existing and emerging parts of MPEG-21, in particular DIP (as explained above) and DRM. In this context, DANAE will develop and improve a dynamic and distributed full-featured MPEG-21 adaptation chain by addressing the following innovative areas: DANAE will extend the MPEG-21 Digital Item Adaptation concepts to dynamic and live MPEG-21 Digital Item Adaptation developing tools to adapt Digital Items in a globally optimized and semantically aware way and to support a dynamically changing usage context as well as to enable adaptation of live content. The DIA architecture will also be extended to support distributed adaptation processes on multiple peers in the MPEG-21 chain. DANAE will enhance the architectural concepts and tools of MPEG-21 Digital Item Adaptation to support DRM in the adaptation process by supporting DRM related restrictions when deciding on or executing the adaptations and by developing mechanisms for the adaptation of protected content. Furthermore, DANAE will also extend the MPEG-21 adaptation chain to include service tracking so as to support the collection of charging information on the adaptation and delivery service provided. MPEG-21 Peers

In order to verify the advanced MPEG-21 chain DANAE will implement several MPEG-21 peers including a server, a proxy server and terminals. This practical exercise will provide a proof of concept and valuable information for completing the MPEG-21 framework by exploring and developing protocols for interconnecting MPEG-21 peers or for requesting adapted content depending on situational factors. On the terminal side DANAE will also explore how to create MPEG-21 content. The research topics detailed above will be solved and relevant results will be contributed to the standardization process in the next 30 months. DANAE thereby relies on the experiences of the partners in developing and implementing tools for an open distributed multimedia framework which have successfully contributed to the MPEG standardization process, specifically to MPEG-21 DIA [4]. Partners within the DANAE consortium have also been contributing to the MPEG-21 DID [16] specification, which already reached its final standardization status, and MPEG-21 DIP [17], which is currently under development. Not only technical contributions were made but also leading positions in the development of the standards (e.g. editorship) are held. For this reason, DANAE will strongly contribute to the successful development of both MPEG-21 DIA and DIP standards.
