Real-time digital signal processing (DSP) using the general-purpose DSP chip is
a very hot subject and challenging work in today’s engineering fields. It promises
an effective way to design, experiment, and implement a variety of signal processing
algorithms for real-world applications. Many industrial companies and universities
are currently engaged in real-time DSP research, development, and education. With
DSP penetrating into various applications and the demand for high-performance digital
signal processors expanding rapidly in recent years, it becomes increasingly important
for today’s students and practicing engineers to master not only the theory of digital
signal processing, but equally important, the skill of real-time DSP design and
implementation techniques.

The book, Real-Time Digital Signal Processing: Implementations, Applications, and
Experiments with the TMS320C55x offers readers a hands-on approach to understanding
real-time DSP system principles, design and implementation considerations, real-world
applications, as well as many real-time DSP experiments using MATLAB, C, and Texas
Instruments TMS320C55x. This book is intended as a text for senior/graduate level
college students with emphasis on real-time DSP implementations and real-world
applications. This book can also serve as a desktop reference for practicing engineer
to learn DSP concepts and to develop real-time DSP applications at work. It is written
at a level suitable for self-study by the practicing engineer or scientist.

This book is based on TMS320C55x, the newest fixed-point DSP processor from Texas
Instruments, Inc. The focus of the text is on the practical aspects of real-time DSP
concepts and applications from system design, implementation, and experiment points of
view. To effectively illustrate hands-on aspects of real-time DSP application, MATLAB
is introduced for analysis and filter design, C programming is used for implementing
DSP algorithms, and a TMS320C55x evaluation module (EVM) with Code Composer Studio
(CCS) is integrated into lab experiments and applications. To efficiently utilize
the advanced DSP architecture for fast software development and maintenance, the mixing
of C and assembly programs are emphasized. The MATLAB, C and assembly programs
that implement many DSP examples are listed throughout the book and available to be
download at this web site. Several real-world data files for some applications
introduced in the book are also available for downloading.
