1. INTRODUCTION
The aim of engineering discipline is to make life easier for people. Engineers should have a fine theoretical understanding. In addition, being an engineer requires having a creative and imaginative mind as well as a theoretical background. An engineer should always think of designing products in an optimum way, considering the compromise between cost and efficiency.
For an engineer to be successful, an imaginative and creative brain and theoretical background are not sufficient. An engineer has to experience real life situations and problems, i.e. engineer needs practice to improve his/her capabilities. We can think of gaining skill to coordinate systems and people as another engineering merit. In this manner the utmost efficiency can be attained. Therefore, an engineer should practice how to cooperate well with the other employees.
The general objective of summer practice can be well understood considering these sentences. Summer training is a good opportunity to observe what engineering really is and what engineers really do. Students meet face to face with real life, real problems and their solutions. During the summer practice, students have the chance to apply theory to practice, to observe applications of their theoretical knowledge and to get familiar with high technology products and production systems. Also, trainees can observe the relationship between the employees, achieving a realistic view of an electronics factory.
I knew that summer training would be very useful when done with enthusiasm. My goal was to gain engineering qualifications and to involve in electrical and electronics engineering.
I decided to have my summer training at Aselsan since it is the leading electronics company that designs, develops and manufactures modern electronic systems. In Aselsan, not only military but also civil completely professional designs are made and manufactured, like Aselsan 1919 Mobile Phone. Another reason for me to choose Aselsan is research and development (R&D) activities that constitute an important part of production. Aselsan R&D activities are the source for %54 of their product line. Also, Aselsan has a strategically and critical importance that it has emerged to be a major supplier to the Turkish Armed Forces and NATO in the military area.
Where I had my summer practice was actually the microelectronic production unit, which is a part of the MGEO division of Aselsan, located at Akyurt facilities.
In MGEO Production Unit, hybrid microelectronics cards for STINGER missile, frequency hopping tactical radio family and LN100 inertial navigation system are produced. Besides these, assemblies of laser ranger/designators, thermal cameras and production and testing of night vision equipment are carried out. The clean room can be considered as the main part of the microelectronic production unit where hybrid cards are produced. Throughout the summer training, I analysed and studied the whole processes done in this unit. I tried to do my best to learn and produce something.
